Topic/Subject: US History – World War 1: The Home Front.

Rationale: 
This lesson allows students to read and discuss information in groups and present that information to each other.  By doing this they will teach each other about the US actions during the war on the home front.

Objectives (EALRS):
1.2 analyze the historical development of events, people, places, and patterns of life in U.S., world, and Washington State history

2.2 analyze historical information
evaluate different interpretations of major events in U.S., world, and Washington State history

2.3 synthesize information and reflect on findings

Materials/Equipment:
Spotlight
overhead
chalkboard
techno music

Worksheet for day 2

 
Procedure:
The students will be divided into 5 groups of 6.  Each group will receive a topic.  The students will divide into two actors and four readers.  The readers will read the section and divide it into four main parts or ideas.  Each reader will then write a coherent and descriptive paragraph about their section (emphasis on well written).  The actors will work with the readers and find a way to act out each of the four ideas.  Everyone will write out on a piece of paper their part and what they are to act or read.

2. Wartime Industry   pg. 554
3. Workers During the War  pg. 555
4. Producing Food  pg. 555
5. Public Opinion  pg. 556

Body: 2/50 min periods

a. Introduce the activity and its importance to the unit (and the test)
b. Assign groups and provide instructions
c. Allow the groups to follow the instructions (end of day 1)
d. Move the chairs in the classroom and set up the spotlight.
e. Explain to the students the importance of the notes they take
f. Allow each group to present.

Closure: (5 minutes)

Allow the students to write a review of their group, turn in their notes, and provide a grade for each group.   

Special Needs:
All information will be placed on the website for students that had trouble understanding or taking notes.  I can also be reached at home through email to discuss individual questions.
