Boredom on the Bus (The Battery Song)
The History:
"Boredom on the Bus" was written in December 1996 based on actual events. Becki and I were on a three-day trip with our classmates in high school and I had borrowed a camera to record the momentous events that would transpire that weekend. The friend who had loaned it to me suggested that I get some batteries for the flash, which I did. I packed 3 rolls of film and two AA batteries in my suitcase that weekend. Upon arrival at the retreat lodge, I decided to find the camera and start snapping. I opened the suitcase and found the first AA, but the second was nowhere to be seen. I searched everywhere, tearing clothes out of the luggage and throwing various articles around the room--anything to find this coveted item. But to no avail.
LuKas Becki, who had barely spoken to me prior, entered the room and asked what I was doing. "I'm trying to find my batteries! I can't find my batteries! They're gone!" I answered frantically. She snapped her fingers rhythmically and sang "Where are my batteries...I can't find my batteries...Hey that could be a song!" We both had a hearty chuckle and dismissed it. Thoroughly frustrated, I gave up and we left the room.
The weekend passed, and I never found that battery. I have no pictures of that Encounter. On the bus ride home, everyone was asleep. Everyone but Becki and I that is, and we were completely wired. We decided to have a bash at writing the song and for the next hour, our incessant cackling kept most people awake. We wrote the music to it within the next week. Becki bought a harmonica and learned to play, so there was our instrumental, and we scatted harmonies as we went. We decided to call our "band" LuKas--sort of like the Indigo Girls...but not. Soon enough, "Boredom on the Bus" (it's NOT just a clever title!) became an instant hit. We began playing in public, me on rhythm guitar and lead vocals and Becki on harmonica and harmonies, including a coffeehouse at our high school. At the school talent show, we retired the song. By this time, the music and lyrics were copyrighted and we began to think about recording in order to preserve the music for posterity before we went our separate ways in college.
The first session was a complete bust. We did it in two hours, there was no mastering involved, and somehow the tape in the DAT was warped. In short, you get what you pay for (in this case, nothing!), but I put a call in to Take the Lid Off! Productions and booked us a session in December 1999. Six hours later we had a perfect acoustic piece: double tracked guitar, lead and backup vocals, double tracked instrumental, a bassline and percussion. Our engineer mixed and mastered the piece for us and now it's available for your listening enjoyment. Big thanks to Take the Lid Off! Productions...
