What happened to our old URL?

In early September, 2001, the Gonzaga University server network had problems.  Lengthy attempts to effect repairs and recovery were to no avail.  It was therefore decided to move to a new server.

Meanwhile, policies evolved stipulating that servers would be renamed.  The name of our new domain is "barney," and so this word now begins our new URL.

We hope to soon have a note at the old URL which directs longstanding worldwide visitors to our new address.

Why don't we choose a "cover" site, or
another domain with a shorter address?

  1. Other, more commercially recognizable domains are often inaccessible during peak viewing hours, and may also be far slower to download to your PC.
  2. They also cost money.  We are a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, with little money!
  3. Free web site space is either too limited in size, or is formatted in a way which does not serve our purposes.
  4. Free sites come with annoying numbers of banners and pop-up windows which advertise various commercial interests, ideas and scams which are inconsistent with our mission and subject material ...and which clutter your PC with incessant cookies, and cache/temp. internet files junk.
  5. Both we and Gonzaga University (Jesuit) are non-profit corporations, and must therefore not become involved in ongoing facilitation, or appear to be a sponsor of commercial or partisan political endeavors.

We're grateful for our new address, even if it does begin with "barney!!"  It makes us "memorable!!!"   :-)

Meanwhile, as time permits, we will first get the 11 primary, original pages updated and back online, then commence long hours of relinking ourselves to other sites and search engines!  Intra-site links must be updated and then links to other sites will be checked for their current status.  This process will require the efforts of several of us, and over a span of perhaps 2-3 months.  We will appreciate your patience and encouragement!

Sorry, but the remaining 26 pages had not been saved elsewhere at the time of the server failure, and must now be reconstructed -- more time yet.  Fortunately, most of those were undeveloped.  Therefore, no critical information has been lost.  You will know which those are when you browse the </Home>, </PipsDrms>, and </Consortm> pages, and find that links to the lost pages lead nowhere, and therefore will soon be unlinked.

This page will be displayed for approximately 6 months, or until there is a broader awareness of our new URL.  Then, our original "index" (now "Home") page will appear again as "index."  Meanwhile, the "Home" page may be accessed by clicking on the boxed link just below, (after it's been successfully installed).  Updating the many links on that page will require another week or two of spare time effort.

Our Profound Thanks!

We are again deeply indebted to Piper Jim Mullen and to Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington for their excellent services and generous hospitality, without which we would not be online and our program, its resources and critical networking among regional Celtic organizations and artists, would not be as readily available to you.

When the link appears here --

-- the reloading of our original pages will have begun.

We are grateful for your many concerned e-mail and other contacts, encouraging us to "hurry up" and get back online!  Believe us -- these months have never seemed longer!!  Our gratitude for this service has assumed even more profound depth!

Note:

This site is programmed in Netscape Composer.  As we do so, each page is viewed through a variety of browsers to closely monitor online quality.

As we now REpublish the site, we're having some difficulty with broken links, and missing animations and photos which are uploaded to the server, but which somehow don't appear online.  We're exploring methods of further correction.

IF YOU VIEW THIS THROUGH ANY BROWSER OTHER THAN  NETSCAPE, you may experience even more extensive corruption of these features.

We must therefore strongly urge that you download Netscape Navigator 4.78 or earlier, using it to view this and other sites which may appear oddly in other browsers.

Re-publication Priorities:

Please keep in mind --

Our site was modestly begun on 20 February, 1998, with a single page.  In response to your expressed interests, it has been an evolutionary, meticulous work in progress since that time.

Such development is accomplished using DSL Internet services, and on a very fast new server, but commonly with a mere few minutes available for programming on each of 2-3 days per week

While some of these operations superficially appear to be quite simple, they actually may involve hundreds of  items, each with a dozen or more steps, to assure quality viewing on most browsers

Some of these hundreds of tasks may therefore require an effort of two weeks or more.

We anticipate that full restoration of the site may occur by late 2002.

Your helpful support and patience will be gratefully received!
