Zags face tough competition in Oregon

The Zags faced extremely tough competition in the Oregon Fall Classic last weekend facing the University of Washington, National Champion runners up University of Oregon and the perennial front runners Chico State. The Zags started off slow against the UW Huskies but remained tough through out the first half. During the second half the Zags exchanged runs with the Huskies changing the lead several times before going down by 1 with 1:31 left in the game when attackmen Ryan Carr got two consecutive penalties forcing the Zags to be man down for the remainder of the game. The Bulldogs were able to score one man down goal but also conceded one in the late seconds to lose by 1. Next up was the University of Oregon, the Bulldogs came out firing goals being recorded by Junior Ryan Carr and Freshmen Stew Allen putting the Zags in an early lead. However, the Ducks were relentless and were tied with the Zags at half. The second half was all Oregon and Gonzaga conceded its second loss of the game 10-5. In the final game of the day Gonzaga took on Chico State, this was a tough game for both squads each having already played two games that day. The score was tight at half with the Zags up by 2. In the end of regulation the Bulldogs had pulled off their first win of the day at 6-5, however, both coaches deciding to get more experience for their team agreed to play an extra five minutes in which the exhausted Bulldogs gave up two goals. All in all it was a very successful learning experience for Gonzaga and much needed experience for this young team. Coach Stein reported being pleased with his team and attributing most of the goals given up to be mental mistakes.

Bulldogs Gear Up for 2008 Season

It's fall on the Gonzaga University campus and that means lacrosse is back! The Bulldogs have started their annual fall season and have a great class of 15 recruits to add to the 16 returners from last years team. Last season ended with lackluster conference play where they feel they did not play to their full potential finishing 7-7 on the season. So far this year the Zags are 5-0 in the fall including sweeping the Rodeo City Classic in Ellensberg allowing only 7 goals over the course of the 4 games. They then returned to Spokane to host WSu on fall family weekend. The Zags look forward to their upcoming trip to Eugene to participate in the Oregon Fall Classic, featured teams include University of Oregon, Oregon State, University of Washington and Chico State. The Bulldogs hope to show off their talent in front of the conference in preseason play.

Last second miracle pulls the Bulldogs Away

The Bulldogs started off hot against the University of Idaho Vandals on Friday night under the lights. However, the Vandals drive was going to test the Bulldogs in a way they hadn't been tested all year long. After the quick four goal lead by Gonzaga the Vandals fought their way back and the game was tied leading into the fourth quarter. The begining of the fourth was all Idaho and with little more than 2 minutes left the Bulldogs found themselves down by three. HOwever, this did not phase the Bulldogs who scored two quick goals. The Bulldogs now down by 1 with less than a minute left got their second midfield on the field and an outside rip from Matt Wigren put tied the game at 13 with only fourty seconds remaining. Peter Janicki won the faceoff and hit attackmen Ryan Carr on the fast break to complete the Bulldogs win and give them their first conference win. [Box Score]

Bulldogs prove to be too much for the Grizzlies

The Gonzaga University men's lacrosse team took the field once again this Saturday against the University of Montana.  The rivalry between these two teams has produced some phenomenal games and this was not one to disappoint.  The Zags got a slow start trailing 2-0 only four minutes in to the game, then senior Brian Young struck for the Bulldogs closing the gap to one.  However, the Zags would have to wait until being down 4-1 before putting their first run together.  The Griz were held scoreless in the second quarter and the Zags received four goals from the attack position as both Scott Seely and Ryan Carr had a pair each.  Midfielder Brian Leslie connected for a goal late in the second to put the Zags up 7-4 going into the half.  Montana came out hot and went on a four goal run of their own.  The Bulldogs got two more goals from Brian Leslie and the game was neck and neck until the final minutes when consecutive goals from Scott Seely and Ryan Carr put the Zags up by two with three minutes remaining.  [Box Score]

Road trip produces two tough loses

The Bulldogs returned home late Sunday evening after two devestating loses this past weekend. The Zags started the weekend off playing the University of Washington Huskies. The Zags got off to a slow offensive start and were trailing 4-3 at half, however this was just the start to there offensive troubles as they got shut out in the second half.  The Huskies defense was able to stump the Bulldog's offense. The Zags then traveled to British Columbia to take on the Clansmen of Simon Frasier.  The Clansmen have always been a problem for the Zags and to date the Zags are 0-8 against the Clan.  The Zags were lead by Scott Seely and they were able to establish a solid lead in the first half leading by 3 going into the break.  However, the second half once again proved to be problematic for the Zags who have struggled all year late in the game.  Simon Frasier was able to put together a large run and the bulldogs were unable to weather the storm.  The Clansmen gave the Zags their second defeat of the weekend 18-8.
