The Four Elements of Hip-Hop

Contrary to popular belief, Hip-hop is not about the "bling bling" or 98% of what is shown on MTV and other media. Hip-Hop can be broken down into four elements, which are: Djing- the backbone of Hip-Hop, Mcing- the lyrics to the beats, Break dancing- what is used to dance to Hip-Hop, and Graffiti- another form of expression used to uplift and beautify urban areas.
Hip-hops roots can be traced back to African drum beats and it is heavily influenced by soul singers such as James Brown and Aretha Franklin.  It is widely disputed about the origins of Hip-Hop, some say the Bronx others say Brooklyn. Hip-Hop is important because it gives a voice to those in the ghettos and to those who are just oppressed or need a voice to speak for them. Hip-Hop in its purest form (before corporate America decided to package and sell it) is a beautiful and misunderstood art. It is the combination of Music, Poetry, Dancing and Art. For me, Hip-hop is what uplifts me and challenges me to think more about my actions and to remain open-minded.
