Electric Power Laboratory
EENG 340L is the 1-credit laboratory that accompanies EENG 340 Introduction to Electric Power Engineering, which is a 3-credit core course in the electrical engineering (EE) program. These courses are offered in the spring semester of the junior year. The Electric Power Laboratory is where EE students gain "hands-on" experience on the safe utilization, operation, and testing of electrical machinery and transformers. Using general lab instructions provided by their instructor, the students perform scientific experiments and standard engineering tests on the machines. The students learn how to safely interconnect machines, meters, and protective devices; how to operate the machines and record their observations and measurements; how to interpret and present their results in tables and curves; how to analyze the results and answer questions related to their observations; and, how to formulate conclusions and recommendations. For each experiment, they write a formal report that is graded by the instructor. The training and experience that EE students gain in this laboratory enhance their understanding of the operating principles and performance of electrical machines. Thus, the students obtain a better appreciation and improved confidence of the knowledge that they have acquired in electric power engineering. They are also encouraged to learn more about this area of specialization by enrolling in the technical electives in electric power systems. |
