History and Mission
The History of the Black Student Union:
Gonzaga University's Black Student Union was chartered in 1979 in order
to engage in projects which the membership considered to be in the interest
of the Gonzaga campus and Spokane Community. The hope was to engage in the
study of Black history, life and political awareness. The original founders
wanted to foster the growth of new African American students in Gonzaga's
community, as well as provide academic support through resources and personal
connections.
The BSU was then re-established in 1993 to further in every way a spirit of
racial understanding, unity, friendliness, and cooperation between Gonzaga's
students. We continue our traditions with the original intentions of our
founders in mind, as we invite all students, regardless of race, ethnicity,
gender, sexual orientation, creed, etc. to help us in our education of the
greater Gonzaga and Spokane Community.
The Mission of the Black Student Union:
To develop and promote a greater understanding of black culture, to
foster social unity among the students, faculty, staff, surrounding
Spokane are, and to fully support the recruitment and retention of
black students into the Gonzaga University family.
One Member's Thoughts:
The Black Student Union of Gonzaga
University in Spokane, WA is an organization of many cultures on
Gonzaga's campus which is making an effort to spread cultural values
and positive views to the GU Community and the
surrounding Spokane area. This page was created as a link into
the world of the BSU. It is a great source of information
regarding the club's leadership, goals, and various activities put
together to foster the effort of developing a strong communal
environment that is pleasurable to any and all races. The members
of the Black Student Union at Gonzaga believe that anything is possible
and will do what is necessary in order to achieve a higher educational
experience. We would like to contribute to the educational experience
of future generations of students in the Gonzaga community. Please take a
moment to view the contents on this page and other provided links to
see
and feel what the BSU is about.
