work even in sc for maybe 4", then start decreasing to make the top of the hat.
sometime along there, start working in turning rows instead of a spiral so that you get a narrow gap in the hat.
continue working in spiral again, closing the top of the gap. work about 10-20 rows of about 12 stitches each.
now start increasing stitches till you get back to 60. work even in 60 for 4".
now pull the most recent part through the gap you made earlier and join its brim to the original brim.
this creates a mathematical concept of a "klein bottle" -- a bottle with no inside or out.
it has only one side (this is accomplished through self-intersection. notice the weird doodle at the top)
i got the idea from Acme Klein Bottle.
all in all it's a pretty nifty concept and a workable hat as well.

the pattern calls for a gauge of approximately 1 stitch = 1 inch. what a terribly vague approximation!!!
here are the changes i had to make to the pattern, just to finish with my meagre 2 skeins:
1. pattern suggests Q hook. i, unlike every other crocheter in the world, chain
loosely, so i used a P hook on the rows where you repeatedly ch 7.
2. pattern suggests 66 stitches for 60", i used 60 stitches for 60" (funny, that fits their approximation better)
3. i was unable to complete the final row of scs as suggested in the pattern due to lack of yarn
if you can afford it, i recommend using 3 skeins and just making the boa full-size. or try 3 skeins of t&q prints

brim: at about 8" from center of crown, begin brim:
do not turn, but work in reverse single crochet for another 7-8 rounds.

hook: P / 11.5mm
yarn: 2 skeins (or about 1.75 sk) lion brand homespun, color 334 gothic (purple)
gauge: in pattern, 100 sc = 6'. so 10 sc is approx 7.2"
pattern: slight modification of lion brand's chenille thick & quick plush boa.
their pattern calls for a size Q hook and 66 stitches across, but since homespun is not as thick as chenille, i used
100 stitches across and a size P hook. additionally, theirs calls for loops of ch-7 length, and i used loops of ch-10 length.
in retrospect, further boas i make of homespun may be 90 stitches with a ch-9, and then 5 rows across instead of just 4.
