project four: hat (6-13-2) same as project three except: yarn: lion brand homespun, less than 1/2 a skein, color 341 windsor.
project five: scarf (6-14-2) needles: size "17" yarn: lion brand homespun, less than 2/3 a skein, color 341 windsor. (made from remainder of hat skein above. yes that's the same color. looks different in the piccures) gauge: so stretchy, it's hard to tell size: varies... approximatley 6" x 60" but easily grows to 9" wide or 80" long pattern: seed stitch; cast on 13 stitches row 1: knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1 repeat row 1 till you run out of yarn or until scarf is desired size, bind off in pattern

(4 checkers = 2 yarn, 2 gap) size: 21" circumference, goes down halfway over ears stitch explanation: hat is made out of "checkers". there are two kinds of checker squares, yarn and gap. each yarned checker consists of 3 double crochets in the gap below. a gap is created by chaining 1. the sequence "3 double crochet in the gap below, chain 1" will be referred to as cs, checkerstitch pattern: hat is worked in rounds. chain 4 row 1 [3 cs]: 3 double crochet in the slip-knot chain loop (very first loop on chain), chain 1, 3 more dc in sk chain loop, chain 1, 2 dc in chain loop. slip sitch to the chain 1 away from the first dc. project fourteen: hat (6-25-2) hook: K yarn: "regular" stuff. approximately 2 oz, maybe as much as 2.5 oz (definitely less than 1 3.5oz ball) pattern: worked in rounds at first, then in a spiral. except for first round, entire hat is worked with a stitch worked in back two loops of previous stitch. (creates ridges at each completed row) chain 4 and slip stitch to first chain to make a loop. row 1: chain 2, work 8 half-double crochet into ring. slip stitch last hdc to chain-2 row 2: chain 2, work 2 hdc in each hdc (16 hdc). sl st last hdc to chain-2 row 3: chain 2, work 1 hdc in first hdc, 2 hdc in next, repeat around (24 hdc). sl st last hdc to chain-2. row 4: chain 2, work 1 hdc in each of next 4 hdc, 2 hdc in next, repeat around (30 hdc). work 2 hdc in the chain 2 space-- hat will be worked in a spiral from now on row 5: increase 6 hdc evenly spaced, going around the hat once (36 hdc) row 6: inc 6 hdc evenly spaced (42 hdc) row 7: inc 4 hdc evenly spaced (46 hdc) row 8: inc 4 hdc evenly spaced (50 hdc) row 9: inc 2 hdc evenly spaced (52 hdc) row 10: inc 2 hdc evenly spaced (54 hdc) row 11-24: work in even 54 hdc each round. to row 24 or until hat is desired size. finishing: work 5 hdcs then 5 scs then 5 chain stitches then bind off. hide ends
project fifteen: klein hat (6-26) hook: K yarn: more regular stuff. purple and purple. pattern: didn't follow one. but roughly speaking: chain 60 and sl st to first chain to form a loop. this is the brim of the hat. work even in sc for maybe 4", then start decreasing to make the top of the hat. sometime along there, start working in turning rows instead of a spiral so that you get a narrow gap in the hat. continue working in spiral again, closing the top of the gap. work about 10-20 rows of about 12 stitches each. now start increasing stitches till you get back to 60. work even in 60 for 4". now pull the most recent part through the gap you made earlier and join its brim to the original brim. this creates a mathematical concept of a "klein bottle" -- a bottle with no inside or out. it has only one side (this is accomplished through self-intersection. notice the weird doodle at the top) i got the idea from Acme Klein Bottle. all in all it's a pretty nifty concept and a workable hat as well.
project sixteen: mohair scarf (7-3) hook: J / "10" / 6mm yarn: Bernat Mohair Plus, approximately 5.5 oz pattern: followed the "crazy stitch" pattern from crochet.about.com, 6 "crazy shells" wide by approx. 88 rows long. size: approx. 7.5" x 64" the instructions given explain how to start the pattern, but not how to finish! so, here's how i finished: end row: chain 3, turn. 3 dcs in sc of previous row. (sc in next chain-3 space. another sc in same place. 2 dc in the sc from previous row) -> repeat all the way across, ending with 1 sc in turning chain of previous row.
project seventeen: ribbed brimmed hat (7-6) useful resource: crocheting in rnds hook: P / 11.5mm yarn: chenille thick & quick, approximately 2/3rds of a skein (approx 70 yd) pattern: worked in rounds. please note: i suggest using the method for closing a round as used in the next hat. all stitches are worked through back two loops (for ribbing) except for first round and brim fpdc = front post double crochet - yarn over, insert hook front-to-back-to-front around post of desired stitch, yo-draw up a loop. yo draw loop through two loops on hook, yo draw loop through two loops on hook. dfpdc = double front post double crochet - yarn over, insert hook front-to-back-to-front starting going down on the right of the post of the desired stitch, and coming back up through the middle of the stitch. complete the dc (as in a fpdc). yarn over, insert hook front-to-back-to-front going first down through the middle of the stitch then coming back up on the left. complete the dc (as in fpdc). this puts two "post"-oriented dcs into one stitch. the chains at the beginning of each round count as a stitch. (for stitch count in parentheses) foundation: chain 4 rnd 1 (10 dc): work 9 dc in 4th chain from hook, then slip stitch to beginning chain: NOT directly adjacent to the first "real" dc, instead it is the next chain over to the right rnd 2 (20 dc): chain 3, work 2 dc in each dc below (2 x 9) and 1 dc in the "fake dc" chain. sl st to beg ch. rnd 3 (30 dc): ch 3, work 2 dc in first dc below, (work 1 dc in next stitch, work 2 dcs in next stitch)*do 9x. sl st to beg ch. rnd 4 (33 dc): ch 3, 1 dc each into next 4 stitches, (2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc each into next 9 stitches)*do 3x, 1 dc each in next 4 stitches. sl st to beg ch. rnd 5 (33 dc): ch 3, work 1 dc each in every stitch below. sl st to beg ch. rnd 6 (33 dc): ch 3, work 1 dc each in every stitch below. sl st to beg ch. rnd 7 (33 dc): ch 3, work 1 dc each in every stitch below. sl st to beg ch. rnd 8 (33 sc): ch 2, work 1 sc in every stitch below. sl st. to beg ch. brim (49 fpdc): ch 3, (work dfpdc in next stitch, work fpdc in next stitch)*do 15x, end by working a fpdc in last stitch and then a fpdc around the ch from row below, sl st to beg ch. bind off: hide ends. if the holes caused by the chain on each row are too large for your liking, weave in the ends of the yarn so that you pull the holes closed.
project eighteen: ribbed scarf (7-7) hook: P / 11.5mm yarn: chenille thick & quick, approx 1.3 skeins (one skein plus leftover from hat above) size: approx 7" x 66" pattern: similar to one skein scarf above, but longer. foundation: ch 91. sc in 2nd chain from hook and every chain across (90 sc) pattern row: ch 2, turn, regular sc in first stitch, sc through back loop only all the way across (88 sc tbl), regular sc in last stitch. repeat pattern row approx 9 times. end row: ch 1, turn, chain stitch (loosely) through back loop only each stitch across... regular sc in last stitch.
project nineteen: ribbed floppy-brimmed "gilligan" hat (7-8) useful resource: crocheting in rnds hook: P / 11.5mm yarn: chenille thick & quick, approximately one [100 yd] skein. (1 skein will surely be enough) size: inside diameter: 7", outer (brim) diameter: 12" (one size fits most) pattern: worked in rounds. the chains at the beginning of each round count as a stitch, and the last stitch is slip-stitched to the top of these chains (next to the first stitch) to complete each round. seam is virtually indetectable. all stitches except for beginning round and first brim round are worked through back two loops of stitches. for explanation of fpdc and dfpdc see previous hat. beg. round (10 dc): chain 3. work 9 dcs in 3rd chain from hook. slip stitch to top of first stitch (slightly to the right of the top of this stitch) round 1 (20 dc): chain 3. work 2 dcs (through back two loops) in each stitch below. the first stitch is the same one that the slip stitch was made in, but since you are now going through the back two loops it is okay. end by working 1 dc in the same stitch that the beginning ch-3 came out of. slip stitch to first stitch. round 2 (30 dc): chain 3. work 2dcs in first stitch, (work 1 dc in next stitch, work 2 dcs in next stitch)*do 9x. sl st to 1st stitch. round 3 (33 dc): chain 3. work 1 dc each in next 4 stitches, (work 2 dc in next stitch, work 1 dc each in next 9 stitches)*do 2x, work 2 dc in next stitch, work 1 dc each in next 4 stitches. sl st to 1st st. round 4 (33 dc): chain 3. work 1 dc each in every stitch around. sl st to 1st st. round 5 (33 dc): chain 3. work 1 dc each in every stitch around. sl st to 1st st. round 6 (33 sc): chain 2. work 1 sc each in every stithc around. sl st to 1st st. round 7 (49 fpdc): chain 3. project twenty two: bobble hat and scarf (7-13) hook: K yarn: red heart brand "light and lofty" -- seems like imitation "homespun" but is noticeably thicker. note to self: use larger than K hook for next project with this yarn. -two 6 oz skeins color 9380 antique blue pattern: i got the pattern from a retail "homespun" pattern booklet. it would be a copyright infringment for me to print it here.
project twenty three: plush boa (7-15) hook: P / Q yarn: two 100 yd skeins lion brand chenille thick & quick, color 122 peacock (rich blue-green) pattern: one of lion brand's free patterns. hyperlink to pattern here. the pattern calls for a gauge of approximately 1 stitch = 1 inch. what a terribly vague approximation!!! here are the changes i had to make to the pattern, just to finish with my meagre 2 skeins: 1. pattern suggests Q hook. i, unlike every other crocheter in the world, chain loosely, so i used a P hook on the rows where you repeatedly ch 7. 2. pattern suggests 66 stitches for 60", i used 60 stitches for 60" (funny, that fits their approximation better) 3. i was unable to complete the final row of scs as suggested in the pattern due to lack of yarn if you can afford it, i recommend using 3 skeins and just making the boa full-size. or try 3 skeins of t&q prints

(160 sc) **instead of doing these scs where you would normally do them, turn the chain over. notice the bump in the middle of each chain. do the scs through these bumps. then the first row of the scarf will look like the last row. symmetrical. nice. row 2: chain 1, turn. sc in first stitch, sc tbl in each stitch to last stitch (158 sc tbl), regular sc in last stitch. project thirtyone: blue hat, red stripe (8-20) hook: J / 10 / 6mm yarn: less than a skein worsted weight. blueish. with a little bit of reddish for the stripe. pattern: worked in a spiral. worked entirely in sc. increase 7 sc per rnd for 6-7 rnds, then 3 sc/rnd until reaching 85 sc around. work in even 85 sc until stripe. change color, work 4 rows stripe color. change color again, work 4 more rows in original color. work 1 rnd of chain stitch (85 ch st) and then hide ends.

project thirtythree: beanie hat, roll-up brim (8-23) hook: N / 10mm gauge: 7 sc = 3", 10 sc rows = 4" yarn: two strands of regular 4-ply worsted weight held together. less than a ball (<3.5oz) each pattern: worked in a spiral. increase 7 sc per round for about 5-6 rounds, then 3 sc per round until 52 stitch circumference is reached. work even 52 sc around for several rows. brim: at about 8" from center of crown, begin brim: do not turn, but work in reverse single crochet for another 7-8 rounds. (or if you are ambidexterous, do turn, and work in regular sc, left-handed, for 7-8 rounds) chain stitch 52x around and hide ends.
project thirtyfour: headband (8-25) hook: I / "9" / 5.5mm gauge: 9 sc (width of headband) = 2" yarn: small amount of worsted weight pattern: chain 10, sc in 2nd chain from hook and every ch across (9 sc) row 1: chain 1, turn. work 1 sc in each sc across (9 sc) row 2: same as row 1 row 3: same as row 2 row 4: same as row 3 continue in this fashion until headband is 20" long (just try it on) and then: final row: chain 1, turn. work 1 chain stitch in each sc across, simultaneously going through the stitches of row 1 while going thru stitches of second-to-last-row. hide ends, or not.
project thirtyfive: plush boa (8-27) hook: P / 11.5mm yarn: 2 skeins (or about 1.75 sk) lion brand homespun, color 334 gothic (purple) gauge: in pattern, 100 sc = 6'. so 10 sc is approx 7.2" pattern: slight modification of lion brand's chenille thick & quick plush boa. their pattern calls for a size Q hook and 66 stitches across, but since homespun is not as thick as chenille, i used 100 stitches across and a size P hook. additionally, theirs calls for loops of ch-7 length, and i used loops of ch-10 length. in retrospect, further boas i make of homespun may be 90 stitches with a ch-9, and then 5 rows across instead of just 4.
