Instructions:
Hat is worked in rounds (spiral) starting from the top (crown). You might want to use a safety pin or a contrasting piece of yarn to mark the beginning/end of each round-- however the "beginning" and "end" of rounds are only loosely followed in this pattern.
Crown: Chain 2
Row 1: Work 9 half-double crochets in the 2nd chain from hook.
Row 2: Work 2 half-double crochets in each stitch around (18 hdc)
Row 3: Work 2 half-double crochets in each stitch around (36 hdc)
Row 4: [1 hdc in next 5 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch] - repeat 6 times (42 hdc)
Row 5: [1 hdc in next 9 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch] - repeat 4 times (46 hdc)
Row 6: [1 hdc in next 14 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch] - repeat 3 times (49 hdc)
Row 7: [1 hdc in next 15 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch] - repeat 3 times (52 hdc)
Row 8: [1 hdc in next 16 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch] - repeat 3 times (55 hdc)
Row 9: [1 hdc in next 17 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch] - repeat 3 times (58 hdc)
Rows 10+: even 1 half-double crochet in every stitch, until hat reaches desired size.
Sizing: do all rows for a medium-large hat. For larger hat size, continue adding rows in the manner of rows 6-9. Omit rows 8-9 for a medium sized hat, or omit rows marked 6-9 for a small hat.
