Crocheted Beanie Hat

Description:

This hat is approximatley 7-8" and fits snugly around the head. It can be pulled down over the ears if desired. Hat length can easily be added to for a roll-up effect. Or crochet fewer rounds for a shorter hat, in the style of skullcaps. Once you get a feel for the size and shape of this hat, slight variations on color and size are a snap!

Materials:

approx 1/2 a skein Lion Brand yarn: "Homespun" (main color) (3 oz) approx 1/6 a skein homespun (constrasting color) (1 oz) hook: K 10.5 hook: J 10

Gauge:

10 sc = 3", 10 rows = 3" - I am not a tight crocheter but hats done in single crochet (such as this one) are not particularly loose either.

Pattern:

Work with K hook. Begin with main color. Beginning: Chain 2. Work 6 sc in 2nd chain from hook. Slip stitch to first sc to create the first round. Chain 1, work 2 sc in first sc and each sc around, slip stitch to first sc to finish second round. Note: remainder of hat is worked in a spiral. Tie on a constrasting color of yarn so you can tell the beginning and end of rounds. You dont have to close each round as you finish it, instead just keep working in a spiral. If you lose track of what round you are on, you can just count the rows from the crown. round 3: 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next, 2 sc in next, 1 sc in next, repeat until 21 sc around (approx 7 times). round 4: 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, repeat 6 more times. (28 sc) round 5: 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, repeat 6 more times. (35 sc) round 6: 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, repeat 6 more times. (42 sc) round 7: 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, repeat once more (46 sc). round 8: 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 12 sc, repeat once more (50 sc). round 9: increase 4 sc (like you just did in round 7 and 8). (54 sc) round 10: increase 4 sc. 58 sc round 11: increase 4 sc. 62 sc round 12: 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 30 sc, repeat once more. (64 sc). round 13: work 1 sc in each sc around (64 sc) round 14: continue working even in sc. round 15: ... round 16: round 17: round 18: round 19: switch to constrasting color (stripe). continue working even in sc. round 20: ... round 21: round 22: round 23: round 24: switch back to main color round 25: ... round 26: round 27: round 28: switch to J hook. work even in sc as before. bind off. hide ends. tip for hiding ends: when you get to round 19 and switch to contrasting color, work your sc's around the strand of main color yarn for about 3". then you wont have to go back and weave in the main color later. repeat process at round 24 when you switch back to main color. the only yarn ends you have to hide are at the crown and the very end. click here for an alternate pattern that uses half-double crochet stiches. crochet index 2002 home page
