Changing IP and Gateway Address

 

Note: Before performing this procedure, contact the Help Desk at ext. 5550. Prior to unlocking your network port, the technician on duty will need to know the IP address that you were assigned at your previous living location, the name of the residence hall/room number that you are moving into and the number on the data jack that you will be using in your current location.

SUMMARY:

Provides procedure to change workstation IP and gateway address to enable access to Gonzaga Student Network after moving a Mac/PC to a new location or if a different data jack will now be used.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Mac/PC has moved to a different location
  2. ZagNet already installed from a previous school session
  3. Working and configured Ethernet network card
  4. Orange jumper cable
  5. Data jack

PROCEDURE:

Windows 95

  1. After you have started Windows 95, close all active windows.
  2. Double click on the icon labeled "My Computer".
  3. Double click on the icon labeled "Control Panel".
  4. Double click on the icon labeled "Network".
  5. In the Network dialog box, click on the tab labeled "Configuration".
  6. In the box labeled "The following network components are installed:" click once on "TCP/IP" then click on "Properties".
  7. Click on the tab labeled "IP Address". In the field labeled "IP Address" change the numbers following 147.222. to correspond to your current Residence Hall and the data jack in your room. (The first set of numbers you must input indicates the Residence Hall you live in and the second set of numbers corresponds to the number on your data jack. à 147.222.Residence Hall.Data Jack) See the table below.
  8. Click on the tab labeled "Gateway". In the box labeled "Installed Gateways" click once on the numbers beginning with 147.222. then click on "Remove". In the box labeled "New Gateway" input the Gateway assigned to your Residence Hall then click on "Add". (See table below.) The number you entered will appear in the box labeled "Installed Gateways".
  9. Click on "OK".
  10. Click on "OK". When prompted to restart PC, click on "Yes".
  11. After Windows restarts, close the "Control Panel" and "My Computer" windows. Now, see if you can use any feature of ZagNet such as Netscape Navigator. If none of the features are available verify that the changes you made to IP Address and Gateway are still there. If the numbers do reflect the changes, then call the Help Desk at ext. 5550 for further assistance.

Windows 3.1

  1. After Windows starts, double click on the "TCPMAN" icon. If it is active, then double click on the minimized icon. If it is not in memory or active, then click on the icon located in the "ZagNet" group.
  2. Click on "File".
  3. Click on "Setup".
  4. Tab to "IP Address" and input the IP assigned to your workstation which can be found on the table below. Don't forget the periods between each set of three.
  5. Tab to "Default Gateway" and input the Gateway assigned to your workstation which can be found on the table below.
  6. Click on "OK".
    1. Message will appear warning the user that settings will not take affect until Trumpet Winsock is restarted.
  7. Click on "OK".
  8. In the Trumpet Winsock window click once on "File".
  9. Click on "Exit".
  10. Double click on "TCPMAN" icon.
    1. If user gets message "Unable to load TCPMAN" then network card may not be configured and working properly or there are too many applications/TSR loaded into memory. User cannot continue until this issue is resolved. Call the Help Desk at ext. 5550 for help.
    2. Active TCPMAN should minimize itself. If it doesn't then just click once on the down arrow on the upper right hand corner of the TCPMAN window.

Macintosh

  1. After booting up the Macintosh, select "Control Panels" from the Apple menu.
  2. Inside the "Control Panels" window, there will be either a "MacTCP" control panel or a "TCP/IP" control panel. Double-click on whichever one is installed. If you have the "MacTCP" control panel, go to step 4.
  3. The following instructions apply to Open Transport (TCP/IP control panel):
    1. Change the value in the "Router Address" field to the gateway address for the residence hall where you are moving (see table below). If you are relocating within the same residence hall, you do not need to change this field.
    2. Change the "IP Address" field to your new IP address. All the rooms in a residence hall begin with the same three numbers and the fourth number is the number on the data jack where the computer is connected. For example, a Burch IP address might be 147.222.134.105 where 147.222 is Gonzaga, 134 is Burch, and 105 is the number on the data jack. See the table below for the IP information for each residence hall.
    3. Close the "TCP/IP" window to make the changes take effect.
    4. Skip to step 5 to test your new settings.
  4. The following instructions apply to the MacTCP control panel:
    1. Click on the "More" button in the "MacTCP" window.
    2. Change the value in the "Gateway Address" field to the gateway address for the residence hall where you are moving (see table below). If you are relocating within the same residence hall, you do not need to change this field.
    3. Click on the "OK" button.
    4. Change the "IP Address" field to your new IP address. All the rooms in a residence hall begin with the same three numbers and the fourth number is the number of the data jack where the computer is connecting. For example, a Burch IP address might be 147.222.134.105 where 147.222 is Gonzaga, 134 is Burch, and 105 is the number on the data jack.     5. Close the "MacTCP" window.
    6. Restart the computer by selecting "Restart" from the "Special" menu.
  5. To verify the changes to your configuration are working, attempt to use a ZagNet application such as Netscape Navigator, NCSA Telnet, or Eudora. If you encounter difficulties accessing the network, contact the Help Desk at ext. 5550 for further assistance.
