Professional Standards
The Pipe Major and the Drum Major are ultimately responsible for:
+ Standards of quality and acceptance of instruments,
+ Choicesof music and performance venues,
+ The integrity of instruction at all five grade levels,
+ The qualifications of individuals to become, or to remain band members.
Professional Associations
Some of our Musicians are Members of the
PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS of the INLAND NORTHWEST, LOCAL 105, of the
AMERICAN FEDERATION of MUSICIANS of the UNITED STATES and CANADA (AFM)
Competitors are individually encouraged to join, and
the band is an Associate Member of the Western U.S. Pipe Band Association (WUSPBA).
We likewise encourage memberships in the B. C. Pipers' Association.

MEMBERSHIP
.
Experienced Players
We welcome all skill levels of players of many kinds of bagpipes,
fifes, harps, bugles, trumpets, flutes, whistles, percussion instruments, etc.
.
Players from Other Bands
We also welcome and extend non-resident, or Associate memberships, for those
who may belong to other bands in the Inland Northwest, across the continent, or from abroad.
(Yes, we have a few.)
If you are, or have recently been a member of another band,
YOU MUST observe the dual courtesy of obtaining the written consent of your P/M or D/M.
WE DO NOT STEAL PLAYERS FROM OTHER BANDS!!
We merely want to be "good neighbors" by inviting or allowing others to perform with us.

Applications For New or Experienced Players
Applications for training or audition
must be directed to the Pipe Major or the Drum Major.

NEW & USED INSTRUMENTS
.
If You Own an Instrument
All instruments must be made by a recognized manufacturer
in England, Ireland, Scotland, or North America,
be of conventional tonal quality, be properly maintained,
and be approved by the Pipe Major or the Drum Major.
.
Purchasing Your First Instrument
Sadly, a few older instruments, once regarded as acceptable,
do not measure up to today's standard of tone and performance.
Many new instruments produced by long-time manufacturers
are no longer as acceptable as were their earlier models.
.
DO NOT purchase an instrument, regardless of vintage,
before consulting an instructor, the Pipe Major, or the Drum Major.
Our percussionists may buy their own drums, for their own use, or for teaching.
However, the band will own a matched set of late-model drums
for primary use in performances and competition.
.
Privately owned drums may be used in some performance situations,
to be determined by the Pipe Major and/or the Drum Major.
Purchase of matched pipe chanters will also be made from band funds.
Very specific kinds of reeds will be required of those who wish to perform or compete with the band.

We ARE a "recreational" band, but with professional aspirations, in that:
                            a.) We try to thoroughly enjoy what we do, but with a consistent effort to improve;
                            b.) We are neither a military nor a paid professional band; and
                            c.) We pursue a highly productive degree of ongoing training and performance.
We ARE NOT a "hobbyist" band, wherein the disciplines of training, rehearsal attendance,
and the integrity of our music are either optional or highly flexible.
Not every player is REQUIRED to enter solo competition.
Every player is encouraged, but not required, to participate in band competition.

THE REQUIREMENT FOR ALL
Is that conscientious progress be made
to fully develop their abilities to a strong, legitimate level of playing.
.
Grades V-III Players
Are required to commit to consistent attendance
at weekly private lessons taught by band instructors,
and at weekly band rehearsals,
unless exempted well in advance by the Pipe Major or the Drum Major.
Lessons from outside instructors are allowed,
but will not be substituted for those provided by band instructors.
.
Grades II & I Players
Are encouraged to establish consistent student relationships
with Grade I or Open players from outside this band.  Band rehearsal attendance
may be negotiated with the Pipe Major or the Drum Major.
.

This is an activity for everyone, even your parents or friends!
Some may come to pipe, dance or drum.  Others may share in organizational activities,
monitor children, make arrangememts for Highland Games attendance by the entire group,
do homework, or simply bring a meal and share in the experience as we rehearse or perform.

Only  CONSISTENCY, Not Obsession --
Yes, piping and drumming does involve work, if it is to be well done.
However, tens of thousands of people worldwide, ages 7 to 70, learn to do this from "scratch."
It is almost surely NOT the most difficult thing you will learn to do.
Given conscientious practice of 1-2 hours per day
on your practice chanter and pipes, or your practice pad and drum,
you may begin to "see the light" of genuine accomplishment WELL within your first year of instruction.
You easily and almost unconsciously spend more time than this on regular games of golf,
on a recreational athletic team, or simply watching television.
In ANYTHING you learn, you "reap what you sow."
Sow little, or low quality -- REAP little, or low quality.

Occasional Extra Effort
Lengthier and/or additional, weekly, individual training and band rehearsals
will be required of all participants, during the days or weeks
just before performances and competition.
Only as you would if participating in a theatrical production,
or a community chorus, band or orchestra.
Recreational athletic teams devote themselves to even greater amounts
of extra practice time before engaging in major competition.

We don't believe in or practice the closed, territorial mindset which is occasionally found among organizations.
As we develop further in our own growth, we are eager to cooperate and share with other bands and organizations whenever possible, whether it is to participate in each others' programs, or to "share" players or instructors on occasion.
