Just out of curiosity, I figured out what percentage of workouts I did on the bike, on foot, rollerskiing, and doing strength last summer. It turned out to be 50% biking, 25% running (and other footwork), 10% rollerskiing and 15% strength. If I did the hourly percentages, it would be a bit different story. I would gues 70% biking, 15% running, 10% rollerskiing, and 5% strength.
I had a nice week of easing back into training after getting over my cold. We decided the trails would be a bit wet this morning, so I headed out for a nice road ride of about two hours. It barely rained the whole ride and turned out to be pretty nice out. Training this month turned out ok. The cold was probably good because it forced me to really take some time off and really recover from ski season. I also took two great naps this weekend, so I'm feeling rested and ready to rock.
Monday night rides start this week. 5:30 at Hugo's. No drops. This ride happens rain or shine, so don't be a pansy. Afterwards, we mosey into Hugo's and have some pizza or some of their other delicious food. You gotta replenish those calories. Ciao.

Comin' back at ya. I've been hitting the bike a lot lately, which according to Scott Jerome, is going to make me a slow skier. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Balance is good. No, you can't spend your entire summer bicycling and be a fast skier. But skiing rewards a broad range of cross training activities more than any other sport because it places such varied demands on so many different parts of the body. Ok, I'm going to try not to get fired up too much. I really hope no one gets offended by my rantings, because I really don't take things all that seriously. You wanna run all summer? Have fun with that. As my high school physics teacher always said, "There's more than one way to get to Saxon." Long story short, I'm going to train like I did last summer. And that means lots of time on the bike, some running, some bounding, some rollerskiing. I had a sweet trip out to Boston and had a coupe of nice runs out there on some nice trails. I've been fighting a cold since I got back, so that has kept me mostly off the bike, though I did join Doug, Dennis and others for a ride up to Cornie for coffee on Sunday. In other good news, seed times are out for the Birkie next year, and I managed to sneak into the first wave. Not long ago, the first wave would have made my day. Times change. I'm glad to get into the first wave though, and I'm looking forward to the race next year. Out.

I skied at Valhalla today and it was in pretty good shape. Catie Cogger whimped out. I think she was worried that she couldn't back up all the talk about taking me down to china town. The A loop was marginal, but the B loop was actually in pretty good shape. The hill that was bad before was worse, but overall, there was probably 90% coverage. Definitely more skiing than running on skis. The forecasted temps and rain the next couple of days probably mean that today was the last day. I'm off to Boston this weekend, so no skiing then. Ciao.

I haven't had any news here, but that doesn't mean I haven't been having any fun. I started off the week with my first couple of days on the bike. They were pretty good, even if the second day was a bit painful in the rear end deparment. Thursday and Friday I hit up Valhalla. Thursday was pretty slow and some pretty nice gaps in the coverage are starting to open up. Friday was perfect with a high of about 34. Saturday morning I was up early to ride with Dennis. Actually, I think we spent more time at North Coast Coffee after the ride than we actually did riding... No worries though, because I put in two solid hours today skating at Wolverine, where conditions were surprisingly nice. They've kept grooming, and the skiing is great. I'm tempted to make a run over there after work one day this week. The rest of Saturday was spent in Duluth trying to get the radio in the car fixed, which turned out to be a bust, so it sounds like I'll be making another trip over there this week sometime. That's all I've got for now. I'm guessing we'll be hitting the bike a bit more after this week is out. I think I'll make it within a day or two of skiing five months.

Yeah, I know I'm a slack with no April Fools post. Sue me. Because I just won the lottery so I'm retiring to Paradise (aka Houghton, MI). Oh, and I threw so much money at Carl Swenson that he's coming back to race for Team Nordic Nuts next year. Those Italian mammine better watch themselves, because Carl's got a rage building. (that's right, I used feminine plural to describe Fauner and Cattaneo, look out) Ok, maybe I got confused about the date today... Seriously, if Carl did keep racing, he has bigger fish to fry than winning the Birkie. Like winning a World Cup. I would move to Houghton if I won the lottery though. I skied both days at Valhalla this weekend and the trails are in pretty good shape. I used good skis all weekend and had a good time. The trails were actually a bit firmer today skiing in the rain today than they were yesterday skiing in the blazing sun. Scott Nesvold and I put in a couple hours easy. Actually, Scott only put in one because he forgot about the time change. But he trained like 15 hours last week, so I think its allowed. The skiing there should survive for at least another week, though I may have to drive a bit to make my 5 months of skiing official the week after that. I'm planning on at least a day at Wolverine next weekend. I was actually thinking about working on the bike today, but I think I'll probably just work on a pair or two of skis and call it a day. The bikes are actually in pretty good shape going into the season. At least I think so. I'll probably get out on the bike once or twice this week just for kicks. I really can't train much less than this week with the whopping 5 hours I put in. I was getting kind of antsy towards the end of the week. Ciao.
