Galaga

The Bonus Stages

Take me to the bonus stages now! I don't care to use the scroll button!

Galaga

Galaga is an arcade game from the 80s. In the game, space bugs fly at you and shoot at you, and you try to shoot them whilst dodging their bullets and avoiding collisions. It's a classic!

Explanation

Okay, so I was playing Galaga the other day. I was thinking to myself, "Self," I thought, "Wouldn't this game be a lot easier if I had all of the enemies' flight patterns memorized already? Wouldn't it be great if documentation existed that mapped out all of the enemies' flight patterns?"
Unfortunately, such a resource did not exist to my knowledge.

Look familiar?

Dedication

So, I decided to create it! Yes, this page is dedicated to Gandhi, because he said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." I wanted the world to have this website so I made it.

Bonus Stages

Okay, here's how the bonus stages work.

scoring system There is a bonus level at stage 3 and stage 7 and stage 11 and 15 and... Well every multiple of four, minus one. The fifth bonus stage you'll encounter would be at stage 5*4-1 = 19. Get it? Good.
From what I can gather, there are only 8 different bonus stages. The reason why I say this, is because the 9th bonus stage is the same as the 1st bonus stage. I'm no ace player, and I am not able to get to level 255 (which then wraps back to level 0, rumor has it), so I was unable to get to the 10th bonus stage. But my guess is: Probably the same as the 2nd bonus stage.

Each bonus stage has 5 "waves" of 8 enemies of each. Defeat each enemy in a "wave" and get a bonus (1000 pts per wave on the first bonus stage, and goes up from there!). At the end of the round, you get 100 pts bonus for each enemy you hit. Or, if you hit all 40 enemies, you instead get a "P E R F E C T !" special bonus of 10000 pts! Not to mention, you get points for every enemy you shoot, just for shooting them. perfect score!

double fighter power If your fighter gets captured by a galaga's tractor beam, and you have a spare fighter, try to rescue your ship! If you do, you'll have two fighters side-by-side. This is extremely helpful for getting perfect scores on the bonus stages, since you have double the firepower!
Its possible to get a perfect score without double firepower, but having it certainly helps!

The Stages

Without further adieu...

Bonus Stage "A"

Blue Bees

Just your run-of-the-mill space invaders.
Wave 1: Try aiming between the "C" and "O" in "SCORE" at the top. If your timing is good/lucky enough, you'll take out all 8 bees!
Wave 2: Start on the left side and move to the right with the wave, trying to hit the galagas. Stop moving rightwards when you get back to the position CO, and shoot as the enemies fly down at you.
Wave 3: Mirror image of wave 2. Easier, since it doesn't have the 2-hit galagas. Aim at GH.
Wave 4: Same strategy as wave 1.
Wave 5: Mirror image of wave 4; aim at GH.

Total points: 20,200

Bonus Stage "B"

Red Moths

What are moths doing in space, anyways?
I can't get a perfect score on this level unless I have dual fighter power. It's too hard to take out the galagas in wave 2. Although I am having luck positioning my ship on the left hand side to shoot the galagas as they fly downwards-- it's still hard to take out the 4 moths too! It's possible, just difficult.
Wave 1: Shoot four at GH then quickly move to CO and shoot the other four.
Wave 2: Good luck!
Wave 3: With good timing, you can take out all 8 moths by sitting in the middle and shooting, since each one passes by 3 times. It's hard to time it to hit them all though.
Wave 4: CO
Wave 5: GH

Total points: 22,260

Bonus Stage "C"

Blue Dragonflies

Yeah! Now here's a stage that's not too difficult to get a perfect score on!
Wave 1: GH
Wave 2: Position yourself at HI and destroy the 4 galagas by shooting rapidly (where they all stay still for a moment). Then move to CO and shoot the four dragonflies.
Wave 3: Same strategy as wave 2.
Wave 4: Identical to wave 1.
Wave 5: Mirror of wave 1, use position CO.

Total points: 24,860

Bonus Stage "D"

Scorpions

At least, they look kinda like scorpions to me. See the claws? That's the green part
Wave 1: Good ol' position GH can take them all out. Sometimes it helps to fly left and right slightly, but make sure to be back at GH if they get back to the top.
Wave 2: You'll note they do 3 loop-de-loops. Try to start on the left and pause at the "downward" part of each loop, and fire away. You've got 3 chances, roughly.
Wave 3: Like wave 2, but mirrored.
Wave 4: Like wave 1.
Wave 5: Mirror of wave 1.

Total points: 24,860

Bonus Stage "E"

Red Somethings

Okay I really don't know what these things are supposed to be. Can anybody clue me in here?
Wave 1: Go almost all the way to the left and shoot them as they come down. If you miss one, try to move to the right a little and shoot it. Your last chance is going to be when they hold still briefly, slightly to the left of the center.
Wave 2: Yeah, good luck, but it can be done. The pattern is like a "club" suit. They start from the left, do a loop-de-loo on the right, then one on the left, then one in the center, then exit to the right. So here's the plan: Start on the left, and fly to the right and shoot them while they fly right, and try to hit a bunch as they are flying "down" on the first clover. Then, position yourself at approximately CO to hit them as they fly "up" on the last cloverleaf, if you miss anyone else, try to fly right and shoot it before it escapes!
Wave 3: Mirror image of wave 2.
Wave 4: Same as wave 1.
Wave 5: Mirror image of wave 1.

Total points: 27,360

Bonus Stage "F"

Green Bugeyes

Yeah, I really don't know what these guys are supposed to be either. They are kind of triangle-ey. Whatever.
Wave 1: Aim at GH. If you miss, fly right and try again while they are coming straight down at you. If you still miss, fly right again and try to catch them (last chance).
Wave 2: This one's really tricky, so good luck! Theoretically, you should be able to hit the galagas as they are flying "up" (farthest right), then move left slightly and hit the greenies as they are flying "up" on the next pass, then quickly move left a touch more to hit anymore galagas that are left as they move "up" on their third pass, then to the center to clean up.
Wave 3: Mirror image of wave 2.
Wave 4: Mirror image of wave 1.
Wave 5: Same as wave 1.

Total points: 27,260

Bonus Stage "G"

Yellow Stingrays

These are the most menacing type of transforming "galaga," since they fly at you so quickly. They're also kind of quick in the bonus stage.
Wave 1: Aim at GH. If you miss them, try to fly rightwards as you shoot, then leftwards (once they change direction).
Wave 2: Start shooting at where they start to fly straight up, then move right (you have to haul ass to keep up with the first galaga) to where they fly straight down and finish them off. You better have a damned fast trigger finger!
Wave 3: Mirror image of wave 2.
Wave 4: Mirror image of wave 1.
Wave 5: Same as wave 1.

Total points: 32,360

Bonus Stage "H"

The Enterprise!

Who would have expected to see the starship Enterprise as an evil insect? Not me, that's for sure! I didn't recognize it at first, since it's blue and red (instead of gray), but once someone pointed it out, it was painfully obvious. Have fun shooting 'em down!

Total points: 32,260

Legend

Position CO = Center/Right. Aim between the "C" and "O" in SCORE (as in, "HIGH SCORE", at the top of the screen).

Position GH = Center/Left. Aim between the "G" and "H" in HIGH (as in, "HIGH SCORE", at the top of the screen).

Position HI = Left. Aim between the "H" and "I" in HIGH.

Notes on Scoring

The game only allows you to get 999,990 points as player one before rolling over to zero! However, as player two, you can keep track of another digit, that is 9,999,990 points are possible. But if you want the game to save your high score, it only saves the first 6 digits (999,990 possible). That means if you want to have the top score on the game, die as close to 999,990 points as you can. If you roll over, (even as player two), the game will only register your last 6 digits of points (note: your score immediately before rollover, 997,000+, will remain as the game's "high score" at the top). A score of 1,234,560 points will prompt you to register your name for achieving only 234,560 points. What a rip off!
